Son Del Sur

description

Son del Sur have been filling venues across the state since their inception in 2004. The name, SondelSur, is a pun. The word Son refers to a specific Cuban rhythm, while the whole phrase "Son del Sur" means "they are from the South"

SondelSur's music is a selection of the traditional salsa heartlands. The Caribbean Islands (Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico), Mexico and Colombia are all represented by the band's repertoire. Furthermore, these musical traditions have been blended with current Miami and New York sounds, creating an authentic and modern sound which just begs the listener to dance.

The dance styles covered by SondelSur's music include - Salsa, Bolero, Bomba, Mambo/Son Cubano, Merengue, Chachacha, Latin Jazz/Descarga

SondelSur uses modern instrumentation which includes -
A big horn section of two trumpets, a saxophone and a trombone.
A rhythm section including congas, bongos, timbales, guiro, maracas, piano and bass.
Two fantastic vocalists (but the whole band ends up singing anyway!)

As Tasmania's premier live musical group, SondelSur has a repertoire which begins around the 1950's and reflects on Salsa traditions. Classics by Benni More, Tito Puente and Enrique Jorrin pave the way for famous Afro-Cuban Jazz "“ Descargas by Chucho Valdes, standards salsa tunes by Los Van Van, the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Ruben Blades, Cubanismo and of course music associated with the incredibly successful film Buena Vista Social Club.
